"You really aren't that funny in person!"

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

That was my husband's reaction to the homeschool blog award nominations. Say what he wants, I've caught him sitting here laughing at the blog. I'm so lucky that he loves me in spite of myself. But he kinda has a point.

What he doesn't know is that inside my own head, it's like an artillery of one-liners. Except they are on extreme slow-delay.

Have you ever heard something, and you think of a dinger of a come-back... like, 45 minutes later?

That's my head. I can never think of anything remotely funny in the moment. But oh! An hour later, after I've processed everything... I am the one giggling to myself. My inner dialogue voice is hilarious. Completely ill-timed, but hilarious.

That's why I love twitter so much. All those silly things that would reveal my true geek-brain if I said them out loud an hour too late... I can zip out in perfect timing on twitter.

So, what's twitter? Oh, I'm so glad you asked!

Twitter is a form of "social media." Like micro-blogging. With super short incomplete sentences (like these). You only have 140 characters.

You must be succinct. So come check it. Find your favorite bloggers on there! Find your favorite celebrity on there. Even politicians tweet. It's the perfect dose for a busy mom who gets "free time" in 5-minute doses, but wants to check in on her friends.

Best of all? It's the perfect place for all those ill-timed one-liners that are too geeky even for this blog.

  1. Congratulations! You've got a great blog...even if you're not that funny in person. ;-)

My dad is the King of Witty Comebacks. I've told him that I'm going to start calling him when I need those witty, one-liners. I'll just tell the person to whom I'm speaking, "Hang on! I have a comeback for that...just let me call my dad real quick."

    Congrats, again!

  4. Funny-I am on a time delay as well. My husband (youngest of five) is awesome at winging one-liners...Not me so much-until I am falling asleep at night or sitting at a red light an hour later...
Is Twitter different than Facebook? I have that, and don't care too much to be there...I was wondering about Twitter...Facebook is not "pretty enough" for me. If Twitter was like my blog (yours actually-) then I would like it...

  7. Oh...you won, you won!! Yippee!

And I agree. Twitter is fun. And not a time suck. I can flutter in and out.

And I NEVER have wit. Or a good come back. My time delay is much larger than 45 minutes. In fact. If you read a post of mine when it publishes...you should come back at the end of the day to see all the things that have changed. When I have fixed the typos. And the links. And edited due to comments. Or I thought of a more amusing way to say the exact same thing...

  8. I'm so happy to see you won!!

I'm the one a step behind with comebacks in my house. I'm just like you ~ coming up with something great an hour later or on the drive home.

I still haven't checked twitter out. Sounds like I need to.

  9. Yeah, congrats... :)

I have a question for you about Twitter, how do you have time for all this media? I barely have time to look at all these blogs, I am afraid to add one more thing... just trying to get this whole twitter thing.

  11. I love Twitter. I never think of one-liners at the right time, like you mentioned, so Twitter IS great for that.

I'm impressed your husband reads your blog. Mine never reads mine. It makes me sad. :o(
