"Close Enough" not Good Enough

Saturday, November 15, 2008

It's still November. I'm still trying to do my part for Prematurity Awareness Month. If you're doing something, I'd love to know about it!

If you've heard anything about preemies, you often hear, "Those late gestation preemies do great! You'd never know!"

This is a myth about prematurity. I'd like you to meet Kyle, a 33-week gestation baby who just celebrated his 4th birthday.

CLICK TO MEET KYLE

His mom, Kate, featured in the video is one of this nation's strongest advocates for preemie babies, telling Kyle's story to educate parents, lawmakers and YOU about premature birth. Kyle is the only preemie I know who spent more time on oxygen than Trouble.

Happy Birthday, Kyle. I'm proud of you, bud.

You can sign the petition to try and get more research money directed toward saving babies by clicking here.

Thank you.

What a precious little guy! Thanks for sharing Kyle's story, Darcy-- I don't think there's any cause more important than saving babies...

If I thought it was hard to call YOU and tell you Lorne was off of oxygen... it was ten times harder to talk to K about Lorne's oxygen and "complain" about L's tube in TX....

You are awesome - thanks for your support for MOD! :)

That is wonderful that you are bringing awareness. I knew next to nothing about prematurity awareness before you. I signed the petition.

I have been reading your blog for a long time, and this particular topic is near and dear to me. My son, a 34-weeker, is going to celebrate his 17th birthday this coming Friday. Because he looked "normal", it was presumed that he was fine developmentally. But I can tell you, after having four more children, the road for him has been so much rougher. Prematurity has touched my family many times, with many outcomes. Triplets lost shortly after birth
(5 month gestation), T-E fistula 7 month gestation - now 23), I could go on. The work you do here is such an inspiration. Thank you, and please keep it up.

Just met Kyle and signed the petition. Thank you for the awareness. Before meeting you, I had no idea of this. I can easily see how hard this would be on a family and especially a mom. Now I understand why it is near and dear to your heart.

Thanks for your post. The video clip was great too. Haven't seen any news coverage here in Colorado, and it's a shame.

You are doing such a fantastic job shining a light on this cause! It's amazing how many babies are born early.
