"0 Days Tornado-Free"

Friday, June 6, 2008

You know those work sites that have signs up that say "151 days Accident-Free" to celebrate safety? Iowa needs ones of those that says "___ Days Tornado-Free". Except ours would say 0. We've had tornadoes every day for almost a week. And we've got more tornado watches tonight, too. We spent last night sleeping in the dank, musty storm shelter. 3 boys, 1 mom and 1 freaked-out cat. Good times. Think they've got wifi in Oz?

So what else have we been doing? Well, turns out some of my sibs went out and got themselves all edumakated. Last weekend we celebrated the graduations of one sister from college and another from high school. Way to go, my Smarty Pants girls! Upward and onward!

Need I mention that it took $89 dollars to fill my gas tank?? Probably not, but holy cow. Something's got to give. That is absolute insanity. It's not like I drive a Hummer or an SUV, fergoodnessakes. But I am seriously rethinking my minivan. Anyone drive a grocery-getter? I have my eye on a more fuel-efficient, low-riding grocery-getter.

And guess what else I have been doing?

I have been drinking really great coffee. I mean frothy, foamy, black-as-tar, beautiful espresso. See this beautiful piece of machinery? It is a Francis!Francis! X5 and it is my new BFF. I LOVE this machine. LOVE it. Is it possible to love an espresso machine? It is if that machine is the FF X5! Isn't she a beauty??? I am still perfecting this sucker - she seems to like me more if I feed her pods instead of ground beans. Whenever I do the ground beans she misbehaves. I will prevail!

And speaking of BFFs, my BFF is now the proud mommy of a gorgeous baby boy. He is 7+ lb of absolute perfection. I spent this evening staring at his tiny toes, his perfect little ears, the most darling little chin... ugh! Amazing! Congrats to BFF and DD! Love you both, congrats on your son! I still can't believe you were birthing yesterday and home, comfortable and so mobile today.

I have pics coming soon that would even make Mr. Perfectly Manicured Lawn proud. And you want to hear something so so funny??? One of our other (nice!) neighbors, came over to... get this... ask Handy Man for landscaping advice!!! Aheheha ehea ahoooho HOO HO HO heeeh eaaaa. Oh, that just makes my tummy hurt! Isn't that too, too funny?! Oh my goodness. Wait, I've got to tell it again. Our neighbor came over - to our yard - and looked around. Then, he asked *my* Handy Man for some tips. AHha ahah ahe he ha eha eah hooo heee ha. I spent the next 10 minutes howling in laughter in our yard until I had tears running down my cheeks. Awww, Handy Man... my dear, sweet, green-thumbed Handy Man.

So hopefully you'll forgive me for the pause in between blogs. It's been a whirlwind - quite literally - around here!

  3. Surely they must have wifi in OZ, because what else are those darn flying monkeys going to do in their down time, you know?

You guys have really been put through the ringer with tornados. I would be a nervous wreck after a full week of em. Goodness.

Congrats to your sisters for their graduations! And congrats to you BFF on her baby boy! He's ADORABLE!

  4. When I first saw this post come in on my reader it was about 1:00 in the am and I was way to tired to read it.

Well that was obviously so true, because when I saw it pop up in the reader, I though it said "0 days Tomato-Free".

Lack of sleep will do that to you. :o)

  9. Oh, yes, so glad you have a storm shelter!! We hunker down and pray in the bathtub! Thank goodness the kids don't totally freak out anymore. It's like, "hey, Mommy, the siren is going off again, so can we just bring our pillows to the tub?" Yep, good times. What's with all the storms anyway?!

Babies. Ah. Wonderful. Precious. Miracles. My now-1-year old is still my baby. Those blond curls just melt my heart. I think I'd just keep havin' babies if money grew on trees, but alas...

...it also costs me $89+ to fill up my mini-van! We've been staying home. A lot.

Thanks again for my BEE-u-tiful blog. You are stupendously awesome. :-)

  10. Another baby toe-lover :) Newborn beauty is unmatched...

Praying those tornadoes away...far away. Actually, perhaps you could send a teeny tiny one my way to whisk my minivan FAR far away - it's $70 to fill mine up. No more fun, frivolous outings for us. A grocery getter sounds great, even if I do have to strap one of the kids to the roof...

  11. Wow. I guess I shouldn't complain about the one day we stayed in the basement this past week for like an hour due to a tornado watch. Sleeping in the basement is a whole other level of seriousness. Ok and so about the coffee machine thingy, I'm picturing you behind your Mac whipping up those beautiful blogs you whip up, working your red hot coffee/espresso machine at the same time. Am I right? Oh and I am getting ready to email you for an appointment. Ciao for now.

  12. Scary! Glad that you're so able to joke about it. My blog entry would be alone the lines of "that's it, I'm moving!" after that kind of scare.

And that baby is just yummy-cute!

  13. I'm with ya, Darcy. We are so used to the sirens now...that they went off during Leighton's ball game, and no one noticed. Sad, right?

Can't wait for pics of your perfectly landscaped yard!

    XOXO

  14. Congrats to the graduates, your proud friends with the super-adorable baby, and to HandyMan!

Boo to tornadoes and especially to over-priced fuel. I bet when I drive out today it is going to be at $4... And I remembering cringing back in the day when gas hit $1.50. Silly me... I think I need one of those Volt electric cars.

Oh and YES YES YES! It is very possible and probably to fall completely in love with an espresso machine. *sigh* I have been happily frothing for the past year. *double sigh* I also totally heart the syrup from Starbucks. All the other brands out there are nastola, but Starbucks? It is completely worth the $7 a bottle and lasts a very long time (unless I have company for a week, in which case it disappears quickly).

Well, since I don't want my Bunn coffeemaker to get sad and jealous, I think I'll brew a normal pot o' coffee.

    Stay safe, my friend!

  15. i cannot wait for this weather to be over! (it's nice to find someone else from iowa!) do you guys have much damage? we've been blessed thus far, ptl!

  16. We are thinking of getting a new car too that is more economical and use it for DH work and non family trips. The Burb just doesn't cut it with these gas prices.

I love that machine too. Don't have one, but I sure like yours. Wish I could order latte's via the internet. One coconut latte please. :)

Oh that baby is so cute!!!! Almost makes me want another one. :)

    Have a safe week!
